BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES - Genetics - Genetic Immunology
Research Interests:
My research is focused on better understanding of innate immunity in fish, specifically on identification, characterization and functional analysis of fish PRRs. I am specially interested in the evolution of innate immunity which is driven by all kinds of pathogens and evolve far more rapidly that other physiological mechanisms.
In the immediate future my plans include: (a) to analyze the evolution of the novel immuno-related genes biochemically, functionally and bioinformatically. (b) to analyze the co-evolution relationship of novel genes with the threat of pathogens. My long-term goal to propose a strategy to deal with the emergency of pathogen threat to human beings. As globalization proceeds, the threat of global epidemic diseases is becoming more and more frequent and emergent. It's urgent to bring up new strategy to solve this tough problem, as the development of a new vaccine is always lagging. I'm interested in a strategy of broad spectrum to fight against a class of pathogens instead of just one kind. I believe that a perfect strategy can be proposed based on the better understanding of innate immunity and co-evolution between hosts and microbes.
